The objective is, with a solid commitment on a business basis, to contribute to a more sustainable development. The work includes, among other things, internal environmental work and supporting various community projects. For us, it is important that our commitment to the society in which we live and operate permeates our entire organization. We also believe that our civic engagement should always start with action, to actually do something that makes a difference. We want to contribute something that we are passionate about and we want it to be imbued with our overall vision.
In order to reduce our climate footprint, we follow the strict requirements set by the eco-label Svanen for hotel, conference and restaurant operations. We have been Swan branded every year since 2009. It is important for us to continuously improve our sustainability work in many areas. We will operate in all areas. To do this, we want to continue to work with both small and large efforts, think long-term and act directly.
Bjertorp Slott contributes to a sustainable tourism industry through Sustainability Life. Together with them, other local partners and on our own, we want to continue to strengthen our destination by creating attractive travel reasons through the different seasons. In this way, we spread out our guests, reach more skilled colleagues and create greater profitability for our business and other actors in the area.
Sustainability Life is run by the West Sweden Tourist Board and is based on four basic principles we like:
At Bjertorp Slott we follow the seasons. By working closely with local food and drink producers, we strive for a sustainable and vibrant countryside all year round. We celebrate the local by working closely with Varasslett's food and drink producers and are proud to be part of Taste of West Sweden.
One social problem we have chosen to focus a little extra on is mental illness. At Christmas time, we donate a sum of money to a selected association. In 2022 and 2023, we donated to Suicide Zero. We have also arranged “Elvafika for lonely seniors” as well as invited to an educational breakfast lecture with Friends on Pskykian health in the workplace.
As part of the Winn Hotel Group, we partner with Hand in Hand as village sponsors in India. The village sponsorship means that we support a village called ILLUDO which is located in the state of Tamil Nadu State. The Hand in Hand Indian Village Programme creates conditions for lasting development through proven programmes in key areas: job creation, health surveys, democracy and IT education and environment. The program also enables the children in the village to attend school instead of being forced to work. The programme spans two years and the aim is to strengthen the entire village structure in all areas. The foundation for lasting development has thus been laid.
We are one of the sponsors who annually contribute to the golf competition held at Vara-Bjertorp GK. In total, the club has raised well over 1 million for the Cancer Fund in the years the competition has been running.
For a period of time, we chose to allocate SEK 25 per overnight conference guest to the important research on Alzheimer's disease. Swedish research is at the forefront of finding a solution to the disease, but money is lacking. This collection is also done together with our sister hotels Högbo Brukshotell and Såstaholm Hotell & Konferens. The result was SEK 30,000, which goes to research through the Alzheimer's Fund.
For a period we chose to allocate SEK 25 per conferencing guest — this applied to all overnight conference guests at our hotels Bjertorp Slott, Högbo Brukshotell and Såstaholm Hotell & Konferens. Then our clients had to decide where this money would go. 80% of respondents chose Unicef as a relief organization. The result was 18,560 doses of measles vaccine, which corresponds to SEK 38,048 in collected money.
